Youth Business International is seeking for a highly skilled, knowledgeable Head of Communications to join our small, dynamic team at the heart of YBI’s growing, global network.

Established in 2000, YBI brings together organisations with aligned goals to develop and scale the most effective solutions to the critical challenges facing young entrepreneurs and catalyse positive change in entrepreneurship culture.

Since 2014 we have supported over 95,000 young people to start or grow a business by delivering a range of practical entrepreneurship support services, from guiding a young person to register a new business and improving their bookkeeping skills to helping them write a business plan or grow their fledgling business through facilitating access to finance.

Our expert members

Our members operate in over 50 countries around the world. They are diverse, ranging from training organisations, microfinance institutions, mentoring specialists to business associations and incubators.  Locally rooted and locally led, members combine deep contextual knowledge with YBI’s sector-leading global expertise and tools.

Role Overview

We are looking for a highly motivated and engaging communications professional ready for a new challenge. As Head of Communications, you will develop and leverage the Youth Business International (YBI) brand in support of our ambitious vision and mission. This is a new role for YBI, reflecting our commitment to deliver a step-change in profile and positioning. 

You will lead all communications activity across our channels, promoting YBI and the incredible work our network is doing around the world to members, current/prospective funders, and the wider sector. You will shape and lead a small Communications Team and work closely with YBI’s Senior Management, the wider Network Team and our members.

To thrive in this role, you will need a strategic mind combined with a willingness to roll up your sleeves and get involved in delivery. You will enjoy leading change and be excited at the prospect of fundamentally transforming YBI’s communications function. You will thrive on building relationships and working as part of a team. Alongside this, you will have brilliant story-telling skills; be well-versed in all things digital; and have an entrepreneurial, “can do” approach.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and management

  • Review, refine and lead on YBI’s global communications strategy
  • Develop and manage the Communications Team, including regular line management and support to ensure ongoing professional development
  • Manage the Communications Team’s annual operational plan and budget
  • Develop and oversee systems and processes to ensure effective communications
  • Set and report on corporate KPIs

Brand development

  • Build the YBI brand with a focus on refining the messaging and identifying opportunities to frame and communicate YBI’s core idea
  • Refine and ensure YBI’s visual identity and house style guidelines are followed
  • Develop brand guidelines, templates and other materials for Network Team colleagues and members as needed for their key audiences
  • Lead branding and marketing of YBI flagship events

External partnership communications

  • Develop and ensure timely delivery of communications plans for YBI’s partners
  • Lead engaging communications campaigns that profile YBI’s partnerships, ensuring the overall story and achievements of each partnership are clearly articulated
  • Plan and support gathering of compelling content from across the global network, including audiovisual, photos, stories, case studies, quotes
  • Develop a media and PR strategy and build relations with key media contacts

Membership communications

  • Working with the Membership Team, set and co-lead network communications plan

  • Oversee bi-monthly member newsletter

  • Support Network Team colleagues on communications and marketing for key member services, e.g. annual Innovation Challenge and masterclasses

  • Oversee YBI’s digital community, our online platform for members

Campaigns and publications

  • Develop and oversee online campaigns related to key events for the network such as International Women’s Day and Global Entrepreneurship Week
  • Lead production and publication of engaging on/offline content across all channels
  • Oversee YBI’s website content and strategy
  • Oversee development of YBI’s social media presence (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook)
  • Lead the production and regular updating of corporate communications materials, including YBI’s annual impact report and flagship research reports

Other responsibilities

  • Represent YBI at events and in the media as required
  • Attend and support SMT, staff and cross-team meetings
  • Any other reasonable duty consistent with the responsibilities of the post as requested by your manager or a member of the YBI SMT
