What makes a youth entrepreneurship support programme impactful? What works?

Over 73 million young people are unemployed. Approximately 43% of the global youth labour force is either unemployed or working but living in poverty. More than ever, organisations which support youth to start up and grow businesses need to plan their programmes carefully to ensure effective support and long-term business sustainability.

But here lies the challenge: there is little evidence about what works when it comes to youth entrepreneurship interventions. On Friday 30 September, Youth Business International (YBI) will be contributing towards this evidence base when we present at the tenth anniversary of the Making Cents Global Youth Economic Opportunities Summit in Washington, DC. The Summit brings together 450 decision-makers from almost 200 organisations and 50 countries focused on advancing the social and economic well being of young people.

YBI's Evidence and Learning Manager, Giancarlo Angelucci, will present 10 key lessons for practitioners to consider for effective programme design and delivery. These lessons – compiled into an Evidence and Learning Review supported by EY – are based on recurrent themes emerging from several programme evaluations undertaken in 20 countries across the global YBI network.

In partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat, YBI will co-present at the breakout session titled “Promoting Youth Entrepreneurship: A Guide for Policymakers and Youth Leaders”. The presentations dovetail: the Commonwealth will focus on the development and roll-out of national youth entrepreneurship strategies, while YBI will share practical insights for effective youth entrepreneurship programme design and delivery.
