BOGOTÁ, Colombia, 15 September 2017: Youth Business International (YBI) and the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank announced the winner of the LAC region Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. The winner, Anna Priscilla Veras, was awarded the title in a ceremony hosted by His Excellency Dr. Peter Tibber, British Ambassador in Colombia.
Anna Priscilla Veras from Brazil was unanimously voted as winner after she impressed the judges with her business venture – Muda Meu Mundo – a social enterprise that supports small family agro-ecological farmers to distribute their products through fair trade. To start her business, Anna Priscilla received entrepreneurship training and mentoring from YBI member in Brazil, Aliança Emprendedora.
The British Embassy in Colombia opened its doors to guests from 11 countries, representatives of not-for-profit organisations and partners working to support young entrepreneurs to start or grow their own business, helping to drive sustainable economic development in the region.
His Excellency, Dr. Peter Tibber, British Ambassador in Colombia:
“It is our great pleasure to welcome Youth Business International and to celebrate together the achievements of the impressive young entrepreneurs they support, who, through their businesses, help develop the local economies and strengthen their communities. We are looking forward to finding more ways to support YBI in the future, as we firmly believe that supporting young entrepreneurs is bringing a significant positive impact in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.”
The event took place in the frame of YBI’s second Youth Entrepreneurship Summit for its regional Latin America and the Caribbean Youth Entrepreneurship Programme (YEP). This 5-year programme was built in partnership with the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank and aims to give entrepreneurship training to 65,000 young people, support 28,000 people to start or grow their business and create 20,000 jobs.
Present at the summit, Maritza Vela, YEP Team Leader from the IDB/MIF added:
“Once again, we’re having a YEP [programme] meeting of committed individuals, passionate about supporting entrepreneurs, exchanging knowledge and distilling good energy!”
The programme is currently developing in 11 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Paraguay, Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
Christina Kappaz, Director of LAC Youth Entrepreneurship Programme at YBI:
“By organising this summit, we are keen to enhance the network interactions and to stimulate the knowledge exchange and joint working; this will help increase the quality of the services offered to young entrepreneurs and maximise the impact they are having in their countries. We are building both on the regional similarities and on the individual organisations’ expertise to shape the very best support structures for young entrepreneurs in the region.”
